Frugal Queen in France.
Welcome to our channel. We are Jane and Mike, British early retirees living in France. We live a thrifty debt and mortgage free life and love every minute of it. On our channel we share: money saving, thrifty living, home cooking, budgeting, simple living and everyday frugality. We put out three videos every week at 5pm Paris time. Wednesday is our mid week money chat which has a financial focus. Friday is all about food and saving money in the kitchen from meal planning to cooking an affordable homemade meal. Sunday shows a personal side of our life and can be anything from a budgeting video to a free day out somewhere in our part of France.

I live on about 2/3rds of UK minimum wage. I reflected yesterday that we eat like kings! Ham cooked in the slow cooker + broad beans from my friend's allotment + carrots + sweet potato. I used my slow cooker and my 2 layer steamer to cook them. Plenty of ham left over for sandwhiches later in the week. Floowed by raspberries - which were free on my Lidil app. Then i lay down on my garden bench and watched the sunset creep across the sky. Very blessed and content. Tomorrow i shall be taking some pretty embroidery thread ( pence from a charity shop years ago) and sewing a flower over a hole in a favourite teeshirt ( bought years ago from a charity shop) - i shall then embroider other flowers to make it look intentional! I will listen to a podcast or story while doing so. All for free! It seems to me that the non frugal spend their time rushing arround unhappily trying to keep up with the Joneses in terms of clothes, holidays, kitchen gadgets etc etc. Whatever they can compete on instantly by spending money on it. Frugality to me means creative contentment while living a slow, intentional life!
Being frugal for me is not buying into constant consumerism and leaving something for future generations behind instead, we are producing so many unwanted items and long-term from ecomic models, to environmental issues to constant debt chasing and devaluation of what you can buy for your buck,it is not sustainable. I got really frugal when i worked in wholesale fashion and saw the mark up of goods bought by 200 to 300%, none of this went back to the people who worked hard at producing it, very little went to business maintence, innovation or staff and i was no longer prepared to buy items at full price where not absolutely necessary because it did not reward all in the chain equally and sufficiently. Being frugal has given me the chance to have an overall better quality of life for me andmy family often during very challenging times and also to pass on things and advice to others. I love the aspect of sharing frugal people run not on one winner gets it all, but there is always enough to share from items, recipes, tips - it is a lovely community. ❤
Living frugally for me means not participating in the rampant consumerism that surrounds us. I, like you, am happy to wear my clothes until they wear out. I never feel I must buy something new just because the seaon changes. Most of my furniture is second hand & that's fine. It is also true that contentment with what you have is important. Constantly yearning for things you can't afford is not helpful.
Thanks
Being Frugal to me is just a great conversation piece, I love to share what I paid or didn't pay for something, this really interests people, then just brag about what I did with it or how much I sold it for then I go on to brag about my $3,500 day at my garage sale, its all silly fun to me, the conversation is always light hearted and fun. I always get asked, have you ever got in a dumpster?
Thanks
Jane, your scarf and sweater are so pretty on you
You are such a dear Jane. I saw what you did there when plating. You gave your sweetheart a little extra. 😉 That lasagne looks scrumptious!
Being frugal to me is having an attitude of gratitude for what I have and enjoy the things I already have. More is not more joy. Joy comes from within yourself by being satisified with the blessings I have and what I can do for others.
Thanks
Love this video and I totally agree with being intentional. My frugal motto is "I can have anything I want I just can't have everything I want", it's about priorities and choices.
Thanks
You look very nice in Navy with the scarf, very nice. About 90% of everything I own in my home or wear is thrifted, used, etc. Probably tools, lawnmowers, chainsaws, farm equipment are the only things we tend to buy brand new. Budgeting and being intentional with spending is the key. We are at the point in our lives where experiences are more important to us than things and that's what I try to spend my money on.
Thanks
Frugality to me means freedom. Frugality allowed me to live debt free, pay off my mortgage early, and retire from a job I no longer enjoyed. I’m now free to enjoy having a choice to decide what I want to do each day. Frugality means patience. I needed a new couch. I could have immediately purchased brand new from any large chain and had it delivered the next day. Instead I patiently perused marketplace and Craigslist for 6 weeks until I was rewarded with a barely used Ethan Allen ( high end furniture brand in the USA) 7 foot couch for $75 AND the gentleman delivered it to my house for $10 more. I’m thrilled with my new to me couch. It’s within “ my “ color scheme and personal taste, amazingly comfortable, in excellent condition and all for a shockingly low price. Frugality means a greater appreciation for the things I do have and my satisfaction level is higher when I do purchase a bigger ticket item. I doubt I would have appreciated a new couch nearly as much if I’d just gone to the big box store and bought whatever. Frugality means being resourceful. I’m finally doing my two front bedrooms ( one will be a guest room and the other a library/craft room. I have a total budget of $500 for each room. This includes everything ( furniture, lamps, floor rugs, window coverings, and all decor) which will be purchased from thrift stores, yard sales and estate sales, and marketplace and Craigslist. I practice frugality in the garden too. Plants bought on the clearance rack and nursed back to health. Asking for or accepting seeds, cuttings or divisions from other people if they offer. I think because I work harder at obtaining what I need and want ( instead of just buying it off the shelf or ordering it) I take better care of my stuff and appreciate it so much more. I could go on and on but you get the idea.
I AM 77 TODAY YOU BOTH ARE MY INSPIRATION TO ME
Happy Birthday!🥳🥳🎂🎂🎈
Congratulations
Stewardship of resources, including time!
Well said
Thank you so much Jane and Mike. The content resonates with me. Being frugal for me means being content and grateful for what I have, not caring about other peoples opinions or standards and feeling secure knowing I can meet my bills! 🙏🧚🏻♂️🙏
Wonderful!
I think you had on something really important there. Because quite a lot of people are always chasing the newest phone or they are chasing the newest technology or they are chasing updates in clothing or they are wanting to extend the house or they are wanting to purchase a bigger home. And I think you had on the ultimate thing that all of us that are frugal. Sums us all up in one word .. content.
Perfect
Frugality for me means delayed gratification and telling my money where to go, not someone else. I know I've been fortunate and try to be a good stewart of what I've been given. When they passed away, my parents were still saving money and not spending their entire pensions. It was a habit of a lifetime of frugal living
Thanks
Loving qnd watching 👀 your videos 📹 intentionally. Frugal means being smart and careful with your money 💰. Loving learning from yoy ans your channal Frugal teacher queen 👸 in france 🇫🇷 ❤ 👏 ❤❤❤
Love that!
I think of Frugality as a fun game. I can always be more frugal, but I am enjoying the process of improving each year.
I agree- I think of it as a challenge game and love trying to find ways to make the budget work. Ours is artificially low while we both work and try and save plenty but its such a lot of fun to come up with creative ways to do do something!
I totally agree that it is a fun game and a long term process!
That's lovely
But aren't you saving for another car ,you gave a list of savings which included a new car the other day .
We will have to replace our second hand car at some stage. We never buy new. It makes economic sense to save the difference to trade in of 5K instead of driving it into the ground and needing 20K to pay for a second hand car totally if we drove ours until it was worthless.
Frugal living for us is living our best life and be thankful for all that we have, and we aim to pay less for anything that we must have/pay for. We are not only not buying, but we are now selling anything that we have purchased over the years, that we now no longer have a need for it. We donate to a local nursing home, and the local charity shop as well. We have lots more to do, but we have built our savings up by doing it as well. We aim to keep our grocery budget controlled by buying up clearance items and storing them for the future, whether canning, freezing, dehydrating or freeze drying. By doing this we are able to hedge our costs against inflation. And it definitely makes it possible for us to do no spend months, including zero$$ on groceries. You are so spot on with living intentionally. You are correct that that is a huge part of Frugal life, at least here at our house. We live on a fixed income due to retiring early and not having a mountain of savings, but by living frugally, it affords us to travel (also frugally),save money and invest toward our future goals. Having a paid for home, truly gives you a tremendous amount of peace of mind. I am so glad to have found your channel, despite being frugal and living on a budget for decades, I keep learning new things. I appreciate all of the work you two put into this channel. Thank you both.😊
Thanks
My daughters were invited to friends houses for the weekend etc when they were at school and university, these friends were well off and wanted for nothing, so they would take my home made Jam with a decorative cloth cover and a pretty label. These gifts were always well received.
Love that!
If I can borrow or postpone buying or do without something entirely, I do. I try never to automatically run out and purchase an "emergency" item without exploring my other options first. My old riding mower needed an expensive overhaul this spring. I will repair it eventually but meantime I tidied up my smaller gas powered, walk-behind mower and I do most of my lawn with that. And I have a man who does a little edging and weed whacking on the steeper areas every two or three weeks. I'm saving a lot of money doing most of my own mowing. And not having the repairs done on my riding mower until I have the cash saved up means I won't be charging anything on that project. Also, my 10 year old dishwasher quit a few weeks ago. For now, I'll wash dishes by hand until I have the cash for repairing the old one or buying a new one. It's no big whoop!😂
That's great
Frugal for us means value for money, not to waste and to be able to travel and have a better life.
Us too- we are frugal so we can do the things that really matter to us- like travel
Super
You know, Jane and Mike when I was a little girl.Of course, I'm 71 years old.It was very godly to live.A frugal life are parents did, our grandparents Did. they grew gardens? We can't.I don't know where we lost it.When? What is your opinion of that? When did we lose that frugality was a good thing
I'm having trouble with this phone printing out my words correctly.I'm sorry
I rotate my clothing and everything, and they will last longer also. It makes you look at your wardrobe. Shop your closet
Interesting fact, we don't have a closet. All my clothes fit in one chest of drawers
We are now fully stocked so we are on a no spend month we now can eat down the freezer fridge and cupboard were stocked up for 6 weeks at least we only buy non branded items all our furniture was for free .
Brilliant
We have got to be in our 70’s and being frugal has helped us to own our home, raise and private educate our 7 children and now can afford to have holidays overseas especially now a son lives in the USA we are in Australia we do all that you said our furniture solid and old and my husband has made tables and I sew make clothes for gifts for grandchildren. Have a garden which I am downsizing and donating extras to thrift shops or give potted plants as gifts. We live on a pension and we managed to live well with what we have and do. Love your channel. 👏👏 from Australia 😃
Thanks
That's lovely Jane, anything hand/home made is always more special, more personal. The recipient knows you put the effort, the care in - even if you enjoyed it it's worth more than just buying something anonymous. P
Thank you
We need to implement decheteries in the US. I HATE going to the stinky landfill and knowing most of what we take there will just sit there forever. the French are so much smarter and conscientious about how they deal with waste.
No landfill here, it's all recycled or burned to make electricity
Beeing frugal means that I have a nest egg now, not living paycheck to paycheck , have less waste and enjoying the journey cause you learn a lot new stuff like baking bread and cake , cooking the clean way , have peace of mind . Your channel is an inspiration
That's fantastic
To me, frugality is simply responsibility and common sense.
Love that
With mince...stroganoff, beef and barley with veg. Unstuffed cabbage or unstuffed peppers.
Being frugal to me means not constantly worrying about my finances. We cook at home, use everything up, and have a kitchen garden. We used to love thrift stores until they became super popular in our area. It's no longer worth shopping in them when I can find a clearance summer dress for $6 somewhere else.
Thank you
I'm the same way - make do, change recipe if needed.
Exactly!
This is slightly off topic, but today has been an absolute illustration of why you need an emergency fund. At 3.55pm my electricity went off, I thought it was a power cut but no…the trip switch had gone on the fuse box and wouldn’t turn back on. I had to call an electrician and now I have some electricity back but it seems it’s a junction box under the kitchen floor and that will have to be taken up tomorrow. I don’t know how much it will cost but thank goodness I have the money to pay for it.
I'm glad you had that fund
Another great video I’ll always give friends a homemade gift and card as one of my friends said it means more than just going and buying stuff. As for clothes I have a black tunic dress that I have had for years a vest underneath in winter, on its own when it’s warm add a bright scarf or necklace voila smart and chic! I come from a frugal French family as my husband and I both say when anyone comes to our house if they don’t like how we live they have a choice of two doors to leave by! Take care
Well said
For me, frugal means being aware of your spending, so that you spend on the things that bring you joy and don't spend on the things that you do not care anything about.
Good point
I'm frugal because I have to as most of my money goes on the animals I rescue. It gives me a lot of joy so I'm willing to go without in order to provide for them. I also don't like spending money when I don't have to and prefer making things to buying. Saying that, I hate being frugal - I would love to have more money so I don't have to worry about anything that might come up and trying to find the funds at a short notice. Unfortunately due to my health issues I can only work part time. Still, I'm happy and I make the best of my situation. The way I see it is, we only have one life so might as well be happy.
Sorry to hear that
@@FrugalQueeninFrance It's alright Jane, but thank you regardless. After fifteen years of chronic health issues you kind of get used to managing as best as you can. I'm a tough cookie so just plodding on best I can. My rescues make it all worthwhile. The pride I feel when I look at the fox I rescued three years ago (and her babies) is worth more than any money in the world.
Being frugal to me means never worrying about money for the last week before payday. Also about sharing, I always look for free slow cookers on Amazon market place. I have given one to my niece who is at university and 2 to colleagues who were struggling to feed families. It cost me nothing but it felt really good
That's super
Excellent idea to pass on crock pots. Love them and the food $$ savings.
Being frugal means I could retire early from a stressful teaching job. The relief and freedom is totally worth the watching of every penny of my teeny pension 🙂
Same here
i love your scarf, its given me the idea to look through my bits and find some lace to sew to one of mine 😊
Thanks
I’ve had the same living room furniture for 24 years. My kids keep telling me it’s time to update, but I’m just not ready yet 😂
It'll last much longer
My parents bought their sofa in 1954 after looking at it for a year but waited for it to be marked down. $300. A lot of money back then for an airman and a drugstore clerk! Been reupolstered a few times but still in great shape 😊
I think we're middle of the road as well. For us its not being wasteful. Don't purchase for the sake of spending.
Agreed
Frugality to us means finding the absolute lowest prices for just about everything
Thanks
Frugality has meant a long time of my life "stingynes". I don't want to be one of this stingy people who never spend a penny for other people or a good Quality thing or nice things . But slowly i have changed my mind because i have to look very good to my money if i don't want fail financially. So a good mindset is the number one priority for me. Because if i now why i have to be frugal i will be frugal😅. I'm still on the way.😊 Thank you for all your Videos. I love especially the videos like this one and all mindeset things.❤ Excuse my english i'm from austria and my schoolyears are far away😂🤗🤗
Thanks
Your English is very good - my school years in French are equally far away and I am certain that I would not write as well in French as you do in English. Well done with the frugal mindset - it seems to be world wide doesn't it!?
Frugal to me is simply being practical.
Well said
Same and also not being wasteful
Being frugal means being careful with our resources so that we do not overspend. It means thinking not only of the moment w are in but in the future as we imagine it will be, Being frugal means sometimes drlaying gratification now so that we can have freedom to do some special thrifty things in future.. It means taking what we need and leaving the rest , as Canadian songwriter Robbie Robertson wtote in the 1970s, I guess it meansb ultimately that everything really does matter!
Thanks
Frugal for me is : ZERO food waste. And cooking from scratch - mostly
Same here
I haven't conquered zero food waste, but I keep trying. I admire your being able to do that. Diane
I live that way too. I don't always succeed but for the most part, we eat everything instead of wasting it. It has lead to some very creative cooking, which is always fun.
Ditto, Jane. Well said.
I had to check lol single person here in USA living on near exactly one half of your monthly budget amount. I don’t have anywhere near the size of your property and I do and I still have a very small mortgage payment and I do still save every month (some months more than others but always some!) Currently having some work done on the house that I'm unable to do myself which will cause saving to take a rather hard hit. The work is necessary so it will serve purpose of increasing it's worth overall so though it will take a bit more "work and commitment" to get savings back, it's well worth it imo. Thank you for sharing with us here! I most certainly enjoy the vids!
Thanks
